Re: Can I reinstall a guest operating system and save existing data in the virtual machine?

Hi,

Noticed you already upgraded to Fusion 10.

Seeing some things the vmware.log that puzzle me.

First you do have the cdrom drive enabled and that  might cause some trouble.

What happens if you in the menu -> Virtual Machine -> CD/DVD -> Disconnect CD/DVD

Then I notice you resume the VM instead of a fresh reboot.

Also from the menu -> Virtual Machine - hold down the option key and select "Power Off".

Then power on the machine again, does it boot normally now?

(Just making sure that you get a clean boot)

I do not see errors about the virtual disk in the log, so that's at least a good thing.

This was the part I was worried about.

Use another Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server VM and attach the unbootable vmdk as a second disk.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I removed the DVD and selected Power Off as you suggested.  When I tried to restart the vm, it produced the same error I described before.  Additional suggestions are very much welcomed.

Thanks,

Ken

Thank you for your suggestion.  Before I attempt to do as you suggest, I'd like to make sure I understand all of the steps - as I'm not too familiar with virtual machines, and I don't want to corrupt the vm I have that is currently working properly.

I know how to copy the Virtual Disk.vmdk file from the virtual machine that does not launch.  That vmdk file has the same name as the vmdk file in my working virtual machine.  Do I simply need to rename the vmdk file that I am copying from the corrupt virtual machine and place it in the same location as the existing vmdk file in my working machine -- and then launch my working vm?

Do I need to do anything else regarding configurations for the new vmdk to be "seen" by the new vm?

Thank you for your help!

Ken

When I compare the package contents from the corrupt vm and the working vm, there are three folders in the working vm package contents that are missing from the corrupt vm.  I've attahed two screen shots to show you the differences.  Are these three folders necessary for the vm to launch?

Thanks again for your help,

Ken

VMware Fusion 11 / Mojave - second RAW disk for BootCamp VM stopped mounting or able to configure: Unable to create the source raw disk: Resource deadlock avoided (720905)

For a number of years I have a Bootcamp disk and data disk on my Mac Pro. The second disk was added to the VM after setting up with RawDiskCreator.

This stopped working with an error: Unable to run: Resource deadlock avoided

RawDiskCreator does the same: Unable to create the source raw disk: Resource deadlock avoided (720905).

Any ideas how to fix this.

It starter after Paragon NTFS for macOS was installed, but I have uninstalled that.

And definitely recommend copying to a separate physical disk. APFS now does snapshotting for copies, and I'm not yet convinced that's totally reliable.

We'll disagree on FUD - I do this for a living, and see compromises on a continual basis - there's risks beyond just those two.

Just make sure you backup your VM's regularly (not time machine) :-)

I have a bunch of DIsco virtual-s00#.vmdk files that use a lot of space. Are they backups that I can move to a external drive or working files that cannot be moved, please advice.

I have a bunch of Disco virtual-s00#.vmdk  files that use a lot of space (each 4.3 gb).  Are they backups that I can move to a external drive or working files that cannot be moved, please advice.

What are the risks beyond those two? Merely stating there are is not helpful to understanding why one should upgrade.

Failure to resume a vm last used on fusion 7 now with 11

I upgraded to Fusion 11 today because the Fusion 7 I had would not work anymore on Mojave.

My problem is that now when I try to resume any one of the two VMs I had (Win XP Prof & Win 7), results in an "Internal Error".

Anyone have any words of wisdom?

I have provided Full Disk Access under Mojave for VMware and VMware10.

Giving it explicitly to RawDiskCreator fixes that. Sudo also does.

VMware Fusion 10 works, 11 still has the issue.

I disabled SIP but that has not impact.

Thanks for the feedback, I do agree!

Btw, which official route did you submit the request from (so I can check on the back end and make sure we're tracking it right

Mojave - No Login Dialog for Windows 10

I'm on Mojave on a MacBook Pro.  I have lots of RAM and disk space.  I am on VMWare Fusion 10.1

Since upgrading, I can't get a login dialog box on Windows 10.  Essentially, this makes my VMWare Workstation useless.

Anyone else having this issue, or have any ideas how to fix it?

Hi,

No the folders ending in .lck are so-called "lock" folders. They are used by VMware Fusion to indicate that the virtual machine is in a running state and that those files they accompany should not be opened in write mode as that would cause corruption.

Another thing you can try is to create a new VM select all the defaults for OS X 10.6 and then when it asks to create a disk you tell it to use an existing disk and point it to the virtual disk from your now not working VM. Then try to boot that. Most likely it still gives the same result though.

If you want to recover files from it then the easiest way to do so is by attaching the virtual disk to another VM that does work.

Eg. shut down your machine that does work and attach the existing disk from the broken VM.

It might be a good idea to backup your good working VM if this is the first time you do that, although in theory nothing can go wrong.

Yep, a snapshot is great unless a bit has fallen over in the base disk on which the snapshot is based.

One of the reasons we have been saying many times here at the forum that a snapshot is not a backup.

A backup on the same physical hardware is no good if that disk dies anyways.

For the record, Vimalin forces you to use an external disk for your backup for these type of reasons.

Were you able to get this resolved? I'm having the same issue with Fusion 11, trying to install a Mojave guest.

No, this is not resolved for me yet. I'm waiting to hear back from the VMware folks so I can get them the support info they wanted.
