Thanks for the update and quick reply. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this thread.

Re: Unable to enable "non-shared" USB passthrough

SOLVED!

I took your advise and connected "... another USB device such as a USB thumb drive through the same dongle/adapter".

Got the same results; I could see the usb thumb drive on my Mac but not on the VM. I then searched Google for issues with accessing usb type-c connectors on Fusion VM guest.

Learned that for usb type-c connectors, the /Applications/VMware Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmware-usbarbitrator process must be running on the Mac (host).

Tried to start it but it would not start. Googled for issues starting vmware-usbarbitrator.

Learned that sometimes firewall software can prevent vmware-usbarbitrator from starting. Firewall was disabled on my Mac but I had another software that bridges my Mac to Active Directory (AD) and enforces AD polices on the Mac. I disabled this software then restarted Fusion but this did not fix the problem.

However, in navigating to System Preference -> Security & Privacy -> General (tab) on my Mac I noticed that there was a message, something to the effect "Mac is blocking VMWare process".

I then clicked "Allow" and restored the vmx file and added only the first two Yubico suggested entries. I restarted Fusion and now it works. I can see the shared and non-shared Yubikey as well as all the other devices I have attached to the three usb type-c dongles connected to my Mac (see below). Thanks everyone for your help!

Fusion 11 VMware tools update fails

$

I've just upgraded to Fusion 11.0.0 on a 2015 15" Macbook Pro 10.13.6. My guest is Windows 10 Home 32 bit. When I try to update VMware Tools, the task fails with "Product: VMware Tools -- Error 1920. Service 'VMware Alias Manager and Ticket Service' (VGAuthService) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services" This occurs even though I am logged in as an administrator.  When I try to start the service in question manually, I get the message: "The VMware Alias Manager and Ticket Service service failed to start due to the following error:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

After going thru the documentation online, I was going to uninstall VMware Tools manually thru the guest's Control Panel. However, it's not listed among the programs. There is in the guest C:\Program Files\VMware the folder VMware Tools.

So how can I can get the tools updated?

Re: Unable to enable "non-shared" USB passthrough

From the looks of it, it was the VMware kext being blocked that was the problem for not showing any USB device in the first place. This is quite common for High Sierra/Mojave hosts.

Quite frankly, the Yubico article is rubbish.

https://support.yubico.com/support/solutions/articles/15000008891-troubleshooting-vmware-workstation-device-passthrough

The two vmx entries mentioned in the Yubico article

usb.generic.allowHID = "TRUE"

usb.generic.allowLastHID = "TRUE"

has nothing to do with CCIDs but only HIDs. I already mentioned the danger/risk of having these in the vmx configuration.

Even the quirks may not be needed at all. I don't know from where they picked up the "allow" parameter. If you want to know about using USB quirks look at this VMware KB

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1025256

As you can see from the KB there is nothing about "allow".

Not exactly inspiring to see a company selling a security related product publish such a rubbish article as an "official" solution.

If you want the "Shared Yubico" to disappear all that is needed should be

usb.ccid.disable = "TRUE"

The other entry usb.generic.allowCCID = "TRUE" is sometimes needed. It could depend on the specific CCID. Usually it is needed for Linux hosts.

VM Fusion 8.5.10 - Not switching between host (mac os high sierra) and vm (win 8.1 pro) with dual monitors

$

Possibly a year or more ago, after updating VM Fusion (sorry can't remember when or what version) my ability to switch between VM and host displays (both using dual monitors) were affected, and often not possible.

The quick solution somebody posted was to force quit the dock.app in mac host and this partially resolved the issue - allowing me to switch from the VM to one of the host displays (the display where the application window on the host is located).

I guess after so many months and the issue becoming more frequent, I have become sick of this problem/work-around and am hoping someone has found a solution?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hayvmware.

Hi Matt

I got the Home setup to work by just running this VMwareResolutionSet.exe 0 2 32 , 0 0 1920 1080 , 1920 0 1920 1080, I attached the log, just in case you wanted to have a look.

I'll try the 2 external and one internal again next week as I am currently out of the office. but the setting are like in that last screenshot, in the previous post set to Resize to fit. I'll try and play around with these, possibly going to try 0 3 32 , 0 0 1920 1080 , 1920 0 1920 1080, 1920 0 1920 1080.

Will let you know next week if it doesn't work I'll send you a new log.

Thanks

Bob

Fusion 11 keeps changing scaling in Windows 10 after the update

$

Just to let anyone else affected know:

I got this fixed by simply turning off scaling, rebooting the Windows 10 host twice just to be sure, and then set my scaling to the original value.

I use a scaling of 150% in Windows (set in Settings > System > Display), which serves me well to get a decent screen real estate on my MacBook Pro 14'' Retina display, both if I boot Windows 10 natively using Boot Camp or in VMWare Fusion.

After the update I got a popup after booting, telling that the resolution got changed and that I have to log off and on again.

I can't recall the complete history but found the software to be more stubborn than myself, not letting me keep my preferred settings.

I got this finally resolved by turning scaling completely off and rebooting, which probably completed a task set by the installer.

After that I re-applied my custom scaling, and Fusions seems to be content with them.

Small Tip:

When using scaling, turning the High DPI scaling override on in a program's or program shortcut's Properties allows to correct the size of individual applications which don't scale (I use the "Application" setting for a few editing tools which appear far too small in my case).

Same issue as the others and I have read the responses and tried the various fixes but nothing doing. Until....

What I did find was that the other logged in users were being asked the VMWare security question but I didn't know this until I was about to reboot and went to log them off (family members). Once they were logged off, I went back to my login and started VMWare 11.0 and this time I was asked about the security options and once this had been confirmed my virtual machine finally started.

Just make sure you're the only user logged on before installing/moving etc.

Also just "upgraded" to Fusion 11 from 8.5 and am suffering this same problem.

My main issue is in full screen you can't drag other Mac windows over the top of the fusion window -- tools,  browsers,  etc.

ISTR that 8.0 had some "traditional" mode setting which was hidden in the Fusion menu system.  Quite frankly if this is the only setting I'm "upgrading" back to a working 8.5 version.

Found my old post: Is non-modal full screen mode supported?

Just to re-iterate:

  • Fusion 11 on Mojave:
    • Macbook Pro running external Thunderbolt monitor
    • Mac: System prefs -> Mission control -> UNCHECKED "displays have separate spaces"
    • Fusion: View -> "use single display in full screen"
    • Fusion window full screen (<cmd><ctl>F)
    • Displays MODAL fusion screen with BLANK second screen.
  • Fusion 8.5 on Mojave:
    • Ditto settings above
    • Displays full screen in one monitor,  other monitor still available,  non-modal (i.e. can drag a window from one monitor to the other and overlay Fusion).

Thanks for breaking it VMWare.  And I have to pay to discover this and waste a load of time.

Now condemned to using the useless Unity mode until I can UPGRADE my VM back to 8.5.

Hi, royzart

Would you please try the following steps?

1. Remove all the contents at C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools

2. Fusion main menu > Virtual Machines > Install VMware Tools

3. In the windows, open the CDROM with the vmware tools in it and install

Thank you for your help!  The suggestion to attach the .vmdk file from the corrupted VM to an existing and working VM did the trick.  For others who may run across the same problem, here are the steps to do that:

This was a big relief to regain access to my data.  Thanks again!

Re: Upgrade to Fusion 11

I do make regular non-time machine backups to separate hard drives stored in different locations.  Mac's keep or overwrite feature's good for this.

After all of this,  I decided to shell out the $100+ and "upgrade".

Am EXTREMELY annoyed that the full screen mode's been broken.  It runs as a 'modal' screen so you can't put any Mac windows over the top of a full-screen Fusion window.  The other screen's blank too (yes,  I could select display in all screens).   But it's the modal feature which makes it unusable so I'm going to have to UPGRADE to 8.5 when I can find some time.

In the meantime I'm trying to do some work using Unity.  My MacBook Pro is now running hot as a result and the UI really isn't very nice,  especially when changing between different spaces on the Mac (one for email+calendar+Skype,  one for Windows dev,  one for remote machines,  etc.).  Switching back to Fusion in the Unity space shows the grey desktop for a second or so until it renders the Windows windows on the screen.

So Unity's no better than it was in version... 6?

Full screen's been broken in version 11 (maybe version 10 which I skipped).

Is it worth going through support to try and get this sorted?

Thank you! It was necessary to boot the Windows 10 guest in safe mode first to remove all the files in C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools. Then everything went just fine.

A quick question to try and understand how the situation arose.

How were you doing the upgrade of tools?

Did you manually run setup from a command line, or from Explorer.exe and selecting setup with the mouse?

If running manually did you specify any options at all?

Could you also go to the logged on user temp directory and collect the vminst*log and vmmsi*log files?

e.g. in command window

cd %TEMP%

The log files might show us some useful information.

Thanks
Steve

That ResSet line for 3 screens should be something like "0 3 32 , 0 0 1920 1080 , 1920 0 1920 1080, 3840 0 1920 1080" (three horizontal monitors) or "0 3 32 , 0 0 1920 1080 , 1920 0 1920 1080, 0 1080 1920 1080" (two horizontal monitors, and one below them).

Hi hayvmware,

I think this is related to the vertical dock that you mentioned in PM.  Can you post a vmware.log and vmware-vmfusion.log when you observe this behavior?  It sounds like you are full-screening the VM, and then unable to switch back to your Mac host desktop?  What method are you using to switch between the VM and host... mousing to the top of the screen, or using the (default) keyboard shortcut Apple-control-F?

You can get the vmware.log from the VM directory, or by following this KB article: VMware Knowledge Base

The vmware-vmfusion.log should be in your User directory at: "/Users/x/Library/Logs/VMware Fusion/vmware-vmfusion.log"

I used both the Virtual Machine menu item and the command line (d:setup.exe) to try the install/update if VMware Tools. Neither approach worked. The log files are rather lengthy in their entirety. Can I send them to you?
