Well, there is Parallels Desktop Lite, available on the Mac App Store, which lets you create macOS and Linux VMs for free (and Windows VMs with an in-app purchase): IIRC, it uses the Apple hypervisor; sadly, there is still no similar “VMware Fusion Lite“ application, which would be the Mac version of VMware Workstation Player...

Re: Adding a physical disk: problem booting
I have an idea floating in my head but not sure if it will work. A lot of this stuff is "unsupported". The kind of "unsupported" that has the meaning "it might work but if you encounter problem(s) you are on your own". High Sierra VM is officially not supported as VM guest OS in Fusion 8.x. The Linux VM running like a bootcamp partition, albeit on external disk, is officially not supported by Apple and VMware. Even the Windows 10 on external USB disk is officially unsupported by Microsoft. Windows 10 setup will not to proceed to install on USB disk on a physical machine but the raw disk VMDK works around that.
I don't think the raw disk creator is officially in the VMware Fusion documentation with the exception of the KB article. But the Windows bootcamp partition created as a Fusion VM would have used the raw disk creator utility to create the bootcamp VMDK.
I will give the idea a try this weekend as a proof-of-concept.
Re: Upgrade to Fusion 11
> VM's shouldn't connect to the internet.
They're not (except to update them). They're just plain old VisualStudio dev machines with as much MS rubbish stripped out of them as possible - including anything to do with Office and anti virus scanning. They're normally installed as either a private network or NAT through the Mac. All 'internet' access is through the Mac's applications - browsers, mail, etc.
A lot of this client security stuff is FUD. Spectre and Meltdown aren't any real concern for a VM running on a private host -- I say aren't a real concern; the real concern is the loss of performance.
The main performance improvements are for graphics-intensive stuff which is never used in my Windos VMs (I don't play games, etc.)
There was a major performance improvement around version 5 but the last couple of updates have been quite minor.
Given that I've avoided updating to version 8/8.5 and 10 on one machine, I've saved a couple of hundred dollars. The other machines are running 8.5 for which I noticed absolutely no improvement in performance other than that from the Mac hardware upgrade.
As I said, I'm really struggling to see any reason to "upgrade" to 11, especially as the *free* Mojave update hasn't killed VMWare (feeding my suspicion that there's been few material updates).
Obviously it's my specific use case. I'm sure other people's mileage will vary.
Mojave, Fusion 11, and Windows 10
So I upgraded and things seemed somewhat fine for a day or two and today I went to use my virtual machine and I'm stuck at advanced options page. Startup repair doesn't work, I don't have a system restore point. I think my only option is System Image recovery. I've searched high and low bit can't quite figure out how would go about doing that. Anybody have any ideas or had a similar experience?
Thanks in advance.
Re: New installation of Vmware fusion 11 pro on macos Mojave Could not open /dev/vmmon: Broken pipe
Hi, Eskimoke
Log files received.
A first simple checking is the launchd against VMware Fusion issue.
Fusion will register some helper tool into /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/
Would you please help verify if the VMware Fusion.app was code-signed correctly?
Open terminal and input codesign -dv /Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app
And was there any some security application at your PC?
(This may stop the registration into launchd process.)
And an initial proposed solution is disable SIP(system integration protection).
(
- Click the menu.
- Select Restart...
- Hold down Command-R to boot into the Recovery System.
- Click the Utilities menu and select Terminal.
- Type csrutil disable and press return.
- Close the Terminal app.
- Click the menu and select Restart....
)
We will look into the details of your log files and update soon.
Best Regards
Re: Mojave and Fusion 11 Crash my Bootcamp VM
Hi, jarre
Log files received.
Would you like a try to disable the VBS of your BOOT CAMP vm and see if the virtual machine could work please?
1 Make sure the VM is powered off
2 VM settings > Advanced > Enable VBS -- uncheck it

Bridged networking with vmnet interface
Is it possible to set Fusion to use bridged networking on its own vmnet interface? The NAT networking options use vmnet1 and vmnet8, but bridged uses the same interface that is bridged, instead of creating its own vmnet interface for the bridge
Re: Unable to Extend Displays
Hi Bobk81,
Just to make sure what settings are getting loaded, can you attach a vmware.log from the 3-monitor case? It might also be helpful to see your vmware-vmfusion.log at "/Users/x/Library/Logs/VMware Fusion/vmware-vmfusion.log". While you are getting things working, I would recommend setting the "Single Window" setting on the VM, rather than using the Fusion global preferences. (Or else use the global preferences for both settings).
If your Full Screen setting is "Resize the VM", then simply enter full screen mode and we should use all 3 monitors. In this case (if it works) you don't need any VMwareResolutionSet command.
If your Full Screen setting is "Center the VM", then enter fullscreen mode and run the VMwareResolutionSet commandline for 3 monitors. (It sounds like you tried that and ended up with 2 monitors)
If your 2-monitor setup at home is still having problems, please also upload a vmware.log from that, and label them differently like -2monitor or -3monitor.

Re: Adding a physical disk: problem booting
I add some info, just in case it is useful. Based on my limited tests, I think that your previous idea ("The key here seems to be once it fails to power up; it mounts the EFI volume. I then eject only SD480 and but keep the EFI partition mounted. I then power up the macOS VM with raw disk and the boot proceeds.") works quite consistently if you can use the whole external disk (i.e., mount and unmount all the partitions). I did not continue exploring that option because in my target computer I cannot unmount one of the partitions (ejecting only one of the partitions does not seem to be enough, unless the problem is something else), which is in use by the host machine.
Re: High Sierra host with High Sierra + FileVault guest - cannot boot
Also not a fix, but another workaround. I found that if I enable FileVault, wait for it to finish encrypting, then select the Startup Disk from System Preferences it will boot successfully. If I simply restart after encrypting with FileVault it would fail to boot. Hope this helps someone.
Feature Request: Add setting for changing the amount of video ram on ESXi hosted VM
I am very grateful that Fusion supports connecting to ESXi servers. I use this feature every single day for work where we have a fairly significant VM deployment. My problem is that the default video ram setting doesn't support high resolution desktops so I often have to shut a vm down and increase it if I need to use a VM for an extended period of time. Currently I have to log into the vCenter / vSphere HTML5 client to adjust this value. It would be great if this setting would be exposed in Fusion. I seem to recall that I was able to modify it in VMWare Workstation before I switched to a Mac. Thanks for the consideration.

Can I reinstall a guest operating system and save existing data in the virtual machine?
I am using Fusion 8.5 on a Mac 10.9.5. When I try to open an existing Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard server, I get the error message "No operating system found". Can I reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Server and save the existing data in the virtual machine?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
How can I recover data from a corrupted Fusion virtual machine?
I cannot open a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server virtual machine, and it has data files on it that I need to recover. I'm looking for suggestions that might help.
I'm using Fusion 8.5 on Mac 10.9.5.
Thank you,
Ken
Feature Request: Additional TouchBar button choices
I created an official feature request for this but I wanted to share it here as well. Hopefully others would also find this behavior useful.
VMWare Fusion now allows configuring the Mac TouchBar. This is great news, but it still isn't as useful as it could be. There are a couple options that would really enhance the Fusion experience.
1) Close VM button - There is not currently an easy way to close a full screen VM while inside the VM. CMD+W doesn't work since it is usually associated with closing a window (maps to CMD+W on Mac, or ALT+F4 on Windows/Linux). This could be mapped to something else, but then you would lose the immersion. Adding the close VM button to the TouchBar would make this a one-click operation. Currently I have to run my mouse to the top of the screen and wait for the toolbar to appear then click the close window button. Please consider this as it would improve peoples workflows who spend all day working with VM's.
2) Function keys - It is possible to hit the fn key to show the function keys and it is possible to generically configure the Mac to show function keys by default. Some VM's require constant use of the function keys and others don't. Unfortunately the current state doesn't allow for this. It would be nice if the VM could be configured to show all function keys, but a nice compromise could be to add each function key to the list of available buttons and we could build a custom set.
Re: Fusion 10.1.3 work on Mojave
Hi,
To add to what dlhotka says, see this item in the VMware Fusion help:
Using Time Machine When You Have Fusion on Your Mac
There's also a link to a VMware KB article at the article I point to in the signature of my forum posts.
Time Machine is great, but not a good fit for large binary files such as virtual machines.
If you want, you can use the free version of my product Vimalin to make (and restore) reliable backups of your VMs.
There's also a paid for variant of VImalin that offers a few more features.
Of course you can also just copy the VM at regular times manually, just make sure the VM is at least shutdown before you make a copy.

Re: Can I reinstall a guest operating system and save existing data in the virtual machine?
Hi,
Please attach the vmware.log that can be found in the virtual machine bundle to a reply here (the attach button is at the bottom right of the edit window) and we'll try and see why you are getting this error.
If the virtual disk is still OK then there are ways to get the data out, but we cannot give the correct answer to your questions without more info.
PS: One reason you can also see this error is if you have changed the boot order in the VM and have attached a virtual non bootable CD.
Not too likely your problem, but figured to mention it.

Fusion 11: unable to find vmmon
It seems that whenever the Google Drive File Stream drive is unmounted, the vmmon module is also gone.
Is anyone seeing the same problem on Fusion 11 on Mojave?
Re: Can I reinstall a guest operating system and save existing data in the virtual machine?
Thank you very much for responding. I have attached the vmware.log file that you asked for. I've also attached a screen shot of the error that occurs when trying to launch the vm, as well as a VMware Fusion problem report. Any help you can provide will be very much appreciated.
Thank you again,
Ken
