Thunderbolt is faster, but USB 3 is cheaper. If you have a spinning disk, they are about the same. Keep in mind this is to host the VM - Fusion will not virtualize a Thunderbolt drive.

This explains the whacked behavior I was expirencing, but I am the only user and the system is secured. So my only guess is the access granted to Fusion somehow allowed the setting to be changed.?
