Earlier in this process I deleted and reinstalled VMWare tools.
The problem in Devices persists. I was asked to troubleshoot via support properties. That's where I was eventually advised to install the printer via the wizard.
Will now turn to Microsoft to see what happens.
One more thing, when I was able to use my printer in Windows, I was always asked to indicate whether I wanted the printer connected to Mac or Windows. I am not asked this any more.
