Your probably not doing anything wrong because a properly configured VPN should not allow communication beyond the endpoints. Not saying it can't be done, it's up to the Network Administrator, however...

(thanks for commenting) MacFuse has migrated to OSXFuse. It supports the older MacFuse compatibility.http://osxfuse.github.com Have that installed to. Works for other volume types nicely.
