Just curious, if you disable Accelerated 3D Graphics does it make any difference? Have a look at: Enable Accelerated 3D Graphics

Accelerated Graphics isn't enabled, so no. I've made some progress - this is something to do with interacting with my thunderbolt display. I can see the text only if the TB display is connected....

This of course depends whether or not you have another Display to test with... So are you saying that if you do not use the Thunderbolt Display things work as they should?

Fusion 5 on Lion hosting Mountain Lion. Unity or Multiple display possible?
