Slow network performance with CentOS guest

I have a late 2012 retina MacBook Pro running VMWare Fusion 5.0.3. I have been running Windows 7 and Windows 8 for a while with no issue.

I installed the latest CentOS (release 5.9) and the network is very slow to connect to hosts, however once connected the speed is normal. For example, when trying to SSH to another computer on the network it takes almost a minute to ask for the password, then another minute to finally connect - however once connected there is no noticable lag. Web pages also take up to 30 seconds to connect, but load fine once a connection is established.

There is no appreciable change by using an IP address in place of a hostname for connections.

The network is "Share with my Mac" like my other VMs. How can I resolve my network speed issues with this guest?

Thanks.
