Glad you got most of the mystery resolved!
It's been a while since I tried this, but there was a time when Fusion was rather uncomfortably incompatible with Mac OS's hibernate-to-disk feature, so maybe that is the explanation for some of the bizarre behavior immediately after power was restored. Maybe?
