One way in particular to keep the size of the Virtual Machine Package more manageable it to not use AutoProtect and keep the number of Snapshots to only one or two when applicable. If you're not doing a bunch of different testing scenarios then there really should be no need to maintain more then one Snapshot and keep it managed by not allowing it to grow larger then necessary.
