As long as you have adequate free disk space then generally speaking the size limit is how much free space you have.  However it is not practical to allow any file or group of files to grow to a size that they would no be able to be properly managed and this again is a part of OS X User File Management more so the VMware Fusion.   Think in terms of a program that could create a video and the video is the work product of that program however you still need to manage that file on the Host's Filesystem like backups etc.  Well a Virtual Machine is the work product of VMware Fusion and is a group of files stored in a folder that is a Package by its .vmwarevm extension, that's hidden by default.  You can manage its size from the VMware Fusion app by the Virtual Machine's Hard Disk Settings where you can clean up the disk to some degree and other then that then Finder and other apps come into play.
