IMO It is absolutely better to clean-build a Guest OS in a Virtual Machine then to do a P2V conversion.  That said there are legitimate reasons for doing P2V vs a clean-build however, again IMO, it's the exception not the rule.  Additionally it is not, nor never was, VMware's intent that a User violate the Microsoft Windows OEM EULA using VMware vCenter Converter to perform P2V however keep in mind that with Windows 8 the OEM license also has a new usage right, the Personal Use License.  In short for personal use one may virtualize the Windows 8 OEM, however unless you purchased it separately then it can only be virtualized on the same physical system it's install on.  So obviously it didn't come from the manufacture installed on your MacBook Pro and therefor you'd need to purchase your own copy of Windows 8 OEM and use it under the Personal Use License when you clean build the Virtual Machine.

That said aside from the normal advantages of a clean-build vs a P2V in this particular case by clean-building you'll find out whether or not the issue is P2V related of VMware Fusion related.  In other words if you clean-build and still have the same issues then I'd say it is wholly a VMware Fusion issue and had nothing to do with P2V.
