I think the only thing that's constant with this is its randomness. My setup contained a SSD as the primary disk and a 7200rpm drive in the Optibay, and I still experienced issues. I think it's more likely that you had the assistance of helpful Unicorns.
FYI I gave up on this ever being fixed and bought a new laptop. That's probably the only surefire "fix" in this entire thread
