Thanks, but I don't think this was the issue. The HW version was already 9 (latest). Going back and forth between different HW versions does not change the situation either.
In this VM, the Windows Device Manager shows "Computer" as "Standard PC." In contrast, a newly created VMWare system shows this as "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" or "ACPI Multiprocessor PC." This is the problem, I believe. I've found a very small number of references to this issue, both with VMWare Fusion and Parallels, but no straightforward solutions.
