Sorry for the slow reply.
I'm not sure if it matters much what I think as it all comes down to what actually happened, instead of assuming.
But no I don't think that windows updates are causing the issue as then many more people would have the exact same problem.
Happy to hear that you finally managed to find a workaround.
Looking at the workaround that VMware support has given you it seems more like that it is some issue on the host side as they are disabling a fusion feature (loading a list with recently used virtual machines) on the right click menu under the Fusion icon in the dock.
