As the other responder noted, you should exclude the virtual machine from the time machine backup (do that manually) - that'll help cut down on the backups for sure.
That behavior with time machine may indicate a corrupt backup or a failing backup disk - if it continues, I'd try either getting a new backup drive or reformatting the existing one (you'll lose the old backups) and see if that fixes it.
