I'm in the same boat. Waiting for a proper solution. If I follow xmnboy's steps then I'm left with small icons, text and menus on my Mac and only slightly better looking Windows 8 VM. I'm not sacrificing the resolution of my Mac to accommodate Windows!
To get my work emails on client site I used to use Outlook 2010 with Google Sync in my VM but now I can't bare to look at it. All jagged and horrible. I just use my phone as a Hotspot and use Mac Mail.
I give it a year before all Macs are retina display bar maybe one or 2 budget or educational machines. VMWare need to get 5.5 out soon (free upgrade) or risk loosing more to Parallels. I've been a Fusion user for 3 years and don't want to change.
