This may or may not work for you if something in the VM or Guest OS is damaged and causing your issue however since it hasn't been mentioned I though I'd throw it out there.
I know you've said you've pressed the caps lock and shift keys however have you tried using Virtual Machine > Send Key > Cap Lock which under normal circumstances toggles the state of the caps lock key?
