It sounds like its the Windows partition of the imported Boot Camp partition Virtual Machine that is running out of space and if you want a better understanding of what is going on then read my replies in Re: HDD Size on Bootcamp Conversion to VM and Re: Counterintuitive Instructions from VMWare on Resizing Virtual Disk.
Also preallocating the existing virtual hard disk is not going to solve the issue!
