I managed to reinstall vmware tools successfully.
Here's what i did.
before installing vmware tools run following command
sudo ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/include/linux/version.h
Then try installing tools as usual.
