The fix: Preferences... [Command+,] -> General -> Gaming: -> Never optimize mouse for games
This restored proper focus, grabbing, ungrabbing (releasing), of the mouse for VMware Fusion 5.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.7, MBP for both Windows and Linux guests.
