Please perform this test inside windows xp vm.
Open the attached file in windows xp and click on the link. ( mailto protocol ) .
It should launch apple mail as per the settings which you have chosen.
Apparently, in Windows XP no additional settings are required.
It workd just fine without any further settings.
Just ensure under default apps in VM settings ,
open mail is selected as Mail.
