Moving Virtual Machines from VMWF 3 to VMWF 5 and to a new Mac

Hi. I'm in the process of upgrading Macs in our office. We've upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion and I'm moving my virtual machines from an older MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.8/VMware Fusion 3, to a new iMac running 10.8.3/VMware Fusion 5.0.3.

I've copied two virtual machines from the old system (Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 64-bit) to the desktop on the new iMac. When I choose File/Open and browse to the desktop for the Windows 7 virtual machine file and open it, I get the familiar VMware Fusion black window with the large arrow/play button. I click it, and I get this message:

"Would you like to upgrade this virtual machine? An upgraded virtual machine offers support for new features, but cannot be used by earlier versions of VMware Fusion until you downgrade it."

I click the Upgrade button and then get this message:

"This virtual machine might have been moved or copied. In order to configure certain management and networking features, VMware Fusion needs to know if this virtual machine was moved or copied. If you don't know, answer "I copied it"."

I click the "I copied it." button. Then I get this message:

"Failed to lock the file. Cannot open the disk '/Users/t***y/Desktop/Windows_7_Pro_64-bit.vmwarevm/Windows_7_Pro_64-bit.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on."

I click OK and nothing happens. The machine doesn't open or run. It does add the Windows_7_Pro_64-bit machine to my Virtual Machines list in the left hand pane.

This same sequence of errors happens when I try to Open the Windows XP virtual machine. Whatever insight anybody can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
