steve goddard is the head of the development team for the VMware Shared Folders feature so you could try pinging him with a PM.
That said, I believe it's hard coded and cannot be changed and if it cannot be changed then that's very shortsighted as it has typically been more common not to use spaces in names when shares are involved. The workaround is to not use that particular feature and use Industry Standard SMB/CIFS Shares instead.
