Thanks, for that. At least I know.
Re: V5 Pro. 10.8 ML Host, 10.8 ML Guest drag and drop & Copy and paste?
Re: Flip-flopping Windows style (WinXP-classic Windows Classic)
In WindowsXP you can select WinXP Classic or Windows Classic, the latter being the "look" from Win 95.
(see attached).
two copies? No, I always launch with a pointer to the sole copy on my system HD (Documents/Virtual Machines).
IAC, that would not explain the "perfect" toggling from one to the other and back.
Kernel panic when suspending Win7 VM in Fusion 5
Okay I just had to update my corporate network password, so I was logged off my Windows 7 VM, and then logged back on with the new AD password. Everything logged on normally. I went to suspend the VM and about two seconds into it, I get the beach ball that doesn't spin, then a kernel panic and my MacBook Pro reboots.
After reboot, I close all unnecessary apps, go into Fusion 5.0.2 again, boot my Windows 7 VM (which is now reporting Windows wasn't shut down properly do I want Safe Mode, etc. -- I say no, boot Windows normally).
I log into the VM (and the network), using the new password and everything is fine.
I hit the pause button to suspend the machine and I get the same frozen beach ball, kernel panic and my MBP reboots.
The kernel panic reports that VMware Fusion is the offending app. I otherwise can't interpret much of the log report. Nor do I know how to retrieve it if it stored somewhere on my machine.
Can anybody help? Should I uninstall and reinstall Fusion 5? I'm not sure the password change has any significance, but I'm sure there's something interesting in the log report that would indicate where to start...
MacBook Pro
15-inch, Early 2011
OS X 10.8.2
Fusion 5.0.2
(also, when checking for Fusion updates via the fusion menu, I get a box that says VMware Fusion was unable to check for updates. A certificate error occurred for the update server. Check your internet settings blahblahblah -- internet is working fine though, since I am entering this post on the same machine!)
Re: Flip-flopping Windows style (WinXP-classic Windows Classic)
Ahh, that's what confused me. It's not Window XP Classic, it's just Windows XP.
I'd be very surprised if this has anything to do with Fusion at all - more likely a windows bug.
Re: "Certificate error occurred for the update server." msg when doing a VMWare Tools Download or Check for updates
Thanks for the investigation, Jwiedow, and for posting an interesting workaround.
We hope to have the underlying problem remedied at the server end "real soon now", so as much as I think Jwiedow's contribution is very cool, I'd advise users to not tamper with the certificate store unless you have a fairly good idea what you're doing and an urgent need to work around the problem.
And hearty Internet paranoia says you should be skeptical of anyone providing a file containing a trusted CA store through a medium that does not provide authentication of its contents. *shifty glance in direction of Jwiedow*
Cheers,

Re: "Certificate error occurred for the update server." msg when doing a VMWare Tools Download or Check for updates
It looks like the new Certificate was issued by a CA that is not trusted by the VMware Workstation default CA package. A quick Wireshark trace identified that the Certificate handshake was coming back as an 'Unknown CA'.
Opening up the VMware Update site (https://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds) shows the new certificate issued on 3/2/2013 was provided by Baltimore CyberTrust Root and Cybertrust Public SureServer SV CA. If you open the trusted certificates (Mozilla-Root-Certs.crt) from the VMware Workstation Installation directory in a text editor and search for Baltimore it will come up with no results.
You are able to add the two certificates you need by following the instructions below.
- Open a browser and navigate to the https://softwareupdate.vmware.com website.
- Click on the Certificate icon to view the certificates for the site.
- Click on the Certification Path tab to view the full Certificate chain.
- Click on the root certificate Baltimore CyberTrust Root and click the View Certificate button.
- Click on the Details tab and then the Copy to File button.
- Export the certificate in Base-64 encoded x.509 format to your VMware Workstation installation directory asCyberRoot.cer.
- Repeat the above steps (4-6) for the Cybertrust Public SureServer SV CA certificate saving the file out asCyberInter.cer.
You are now ready to add the certificates into the trusted CA store (Mozilla-Root-Certs.crt).
- Open a command prompt (or shell prompt if running on Linux) as Administrator or root.
- Start by making a backup of the original Mozilla-Root-Certs.crt file. Use the method of your choice. (copy mozilla-root-certs.crt mozilla-root-certs.crt.orig)
- Add in the Baltimore CyberTrust Root certificate using openssl. Openssl should be installed in the root of your VMware Workstation directory.
- openssl x509 -text -in CyberRoot.cer >> Mozilla-Root-Certs.crt
- Add in the Cybertrust Public SureServer SV CA certificate using the same command as above.
- openssl x509 -text -in CyberInter.cer >> Mozilla-Root-Certs.crt

I am sure it broke some fundamental law of the universe when I said "real soon now" and it happened... real soon!
Thanks everyone for your patience and help getting this resolved!

Re: Installing Windows 8 Pro
Hi,
For Q2, the links provided are applicable. The license key for windows 8 which you currently have is probably an upgrade key. Many Windows 8 user have experienced same issue. They assume its full version whereas its not in majority of windows 8 buyers. Both links posted addresses this issue for fresh install.
For Q1, the sluggish ness, slowness, mouse and keyboard issue all point out towards improper / partial upgrade method.
I recommend you to have a look at
upgrading windows xp to windows 8
This addresses the post migration issue especially with network, sound and also mouse and keyboard. Basically you need to change the virtual machine template from windows xp to windows 8 as described in the article in general settings.
Re: Kernel panic when suspending Win7 VM in Fusion 5
Hi KarriC,
The kernel panic information should be in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (that's not the Library folder inside your home directory, it's the one that is directly inside your Macintosh HD). If you can't readily find it, try launching Applications > Utilities > Console.app and looking through that.
Usually the panic information also is available right after you reboot the host, when Mac OS shows a window telling you that the system restarted due to a problem, and offering to report it to Apple. If you click the Details button, it generally shows the panic information and you can copy-and-paste it from there.
Regarding the update error: A problem developed with our update servers over the weekend. We're already looking into it and hope to have it resolved soon. Thanks for letting us know!

Re: "Certificate error occurred for the update server." msg when doing a VMWare Tools Download or Check for updates
SO, is this another bug the VMWare refuses to fix ? Are they going out of business or selling off/shutting down certain products. Many processes are broken and many bugs are going wihout any bug fixes. It is so frustrating that VMWare refuses to fix anything and support their software releases.
Re: "Certificate error occurred for the update server." msg when doing a VMWare Tools Download or Check for updates
Hi DallasJeff,
We believe this server problem was fixed about three hours ago. Are you still encountering difficulties checking for updates or downloading VMware Tools there?

You still haven't fixed your bugs from last year …..

No problems now.
Thank You.
Problems with shared desktop in VMWare Fusion5
I have a virtual machine I use in VMWare Fusion5. It is running Windows 8
I moved the VM from one Mac to another and then back again (long and painful story) using a time machine backup.
The VM is on the original machine it was setup on but it has been restored from a complete time machine backup. Since I have done this my OSX desktop appears as the Windows8 desktop in the VM. What I can't do is open anything on the desktop.
I am guessing the problem is actually down to either permissions or broken links. How do I find out and then fix?
As an aside, in an ideal world my VM wouldn't have a shared desktop with OSX. Is that possible to setup?
Re: "Certificate error occurred for the update server." msg when doing a VMWare Tools Download or Check for updates
Finally :-)
Thanks.
Re: Problems with shared desktop in VMWare Fusion5
Thanks WoodyZ
I have turned off shared folders and that seems to doing what I want now.
Re: Problems with shared desktop in VMWare Fusion5
Turn off Mirrored Folders. Have a look at: Add or Remove a Mirrored Folder
Also if necessary turn off Shared Folders. Have a look at: Remove a Shared Folder
BTW... It is a known fact that Time Machine is not 100% reliable backing up/restoring Virtual Machines under all circumstances/conditions. Also backing up Virtual Machines via Time Machine is disk/time intensive and wastes a tremendous amount of space for something that may be corrupt and worthless come time to restore it. At a minimum I would exclude Virtual Machines from Time Machine and with the Virtual Machines shutdown, not suspended, and VMware Fusion closed then manually copy the Virtual Machines Package(s) to an alternate location, preferably on to a different physical hard disk. Then keep the User Data that is stored within the Virtual Machine backed up off of the Virtual Machine on a regular basis so as to always have a current User Data Backup. If you have to restore a properly backed up Virtual Machine that is not as current at least you'll have a working Virtual Machine and current User Data to go forward with when you find out your Time Machine Backup of the Virtual Machine fails.
Copy/Paste not working in OS 10.8.2 and VM Fusion 5.0.2
I"ve reinstalled, repaired, and everything else I could think of with the VMware tools. Still no luck. Thoughts?
